The recent, global CPAP recall announced by Philips Respironics (1), dentists are faced with a call to arms for oral appliance therapy. There has never been an opportunity to both help patients and build relationships with physicians like this.

On April 26, 2021, Philips advised all patients with recalled CPAPs (~4 million devices worldwide) to discontinue the use of their CPAP machine unless their PCP advised them otherwise based on their other health conditions. As of today, the proposed solution for the recalled units has yet to receive FDA approval. Given supply chain limitations for other CPAP manufacturers and the rumors of prioritizing the most severe cases, many patients will likely go untreated.
