On a recent road trip through Quebec, I stopped by Panthera Dental’s lab. I’ve seen a lot of appliances over the years, but what I saw at Panthera truly stood out. The precision, the engineering, the patient-first design—it’s next-level.

Our practice has used a wide range of oral appliances to treat obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) for years. But when we started working with the Panthera Classic, we immediately noticed this device is different.

What Makes the Panthera Classic Stand Out

Here’s why we’ve made the Panthera Classic a go-to in our practice:

  • Precision Fit – No pressure points. No gum irritation. Just a secure, gentle grip.
  • Serious Comfort – Especially around the front teeth, where many appliances fall short.
  • Natural Jaw Positioning – Its strap placement supports a relaxed bite, reducing muscle tension.

These details matter. When patients feel good wearing their appliance, they actually wear it. And that’s what leads to long-term success.

Let’s break down how each of these benefits works and why they matter for treatment success.

Precision fit and outstanding comfort

One of the first things we noticed with the Panthera Classic is how well it fits without compromising comfort.

Panthera uses proprietary software to custom-design each appliance so it grips the teeth securely but gently. It avoids the common pitfalls of other appliances like excessive pressure on the teeth or gums which can lead to discomfort or poor compliance.

A big comfort upgrade? Panthera’s design leaves space around the front teeth. That’s important because many patients complain that their front teeth feel pushed or sore with other appliances. By relieving that pressure, Panthera helps patients feel good about wearing it night after night.

Relaxed Jaw Positioning

A unique feature of the Panthera Classic is the alignment of its straps. They’re placed to follow the natural bite, which helps guide the jaw into a relaxed position during sleep.

This isn’t just about comfort, it’s also about muscle tension. When the jaw is allowed to rest in a natural position, the muscles don’t have to fight against the appliance. That makes a big difference in how patients feel when they wake up.

The Panthera Classic offers a thoughtfully engineered blend of comfort, fit, and simplicity. With its digital design, jaw-friendly strap placement, and easy setup, we’ve found it helps patients adapt quickly and stick with treatment long-term.

And when patients feel better, they sleep better. Exactly what we’re aiming for.

Designed for Real-Life Success

The Panthera Classic is more than just comfortable—it’s smart. It adapts to digital workflows, streamlines production, and helps patients adjust quickly. We’ve found that patients stick with this device longer and see better results faster.

And when patients wake up feeling rested? That’s the win.

Ideal for Insurance and Veteran Cases

Working with veterans or billing medical insurance? The Panthera Classic checks the boxes:

  1. Medicare and VA-approved
  2. Digitally manufactured
  3. Lightweight and slim—no bulky retainer feel

In practices where insurance approval can slow things down, this device keeps things moving.

Contraindications and Other Considerations

While the Panthera Classic is one of our go-to appliances, there are still situations where it may not be the best fit. In those cases, we pivot to other options depending on the patient’s needs.

Here are a few reasons we don’t use the Panthera Classic:

  1. Patients with active periodontal disease
  2. Severely limited protrusion
  3. Non-digital workflows

If a patient has unstable periodontal health, we avoid using a milled device like Panthera. The precise fit of the appliance can put too much stress on already compromised teeth or soft tissue.

The titration range may not provide the desired results for patients with very limited mandibular movement (protrusion). In these situations, we’ll consider appliances with more mechanical adjustability or that accommodate a broader range of motion.

Lastly, if a practice is still using traditional impressions and hasn’t transitioned to digital, Panthera may not be the right match. The workflow is entirely digital, so having an intraoral scanner is key to maximizing its benefits.

In these cases, we typically turn to more flexible, analog-compatible options—especially when treating complex cases or working in practices without a digital workflow.

Conclusion

The Panthera Classic is one of the most versatile, patient-friendly appliances we’ve worked with. Its approval for insurance, digital efficiency, and unmatched comfort make it an easy recommendation.
